Latihan buang air secara mandiri di toilet atau potty training, bisa menjadi hal yang menakutkan, baik untuk anak maupun orang tua. Banyak orang tua (bahkan kebanyakan dari mereka) seringkali menganggap potty training sebagai hal yang paling sulit untuk diajarkan ke anak. Dalam perspektif Montessori, mereka menyebut “kesadaran toilet” atau “belajar toilet” sebagai hal yang sangat berhubungan dengan menghormati anak. Hal ini dikarenakan orang tua harus membimbing anak mereka, bukan melatih (seperti yang dilakukan orang dengan anjingnya).

Faktanya, popok dan pispot hanyalah aksesoris modern yang kita bisa gunakan sementara untuk mempermudah hidup. Sedangkan membimbing anak Anda untuk menggunakan toilet membutuhkan kerja keras, dan ini merupakan keterampilan yang mereka kembangkan seiring dengan waktu.

Ketika kita mengajarkan anak untuk potty training, kita tidak hanya mengajari anaknya cara menggunakan toilet tapi juga membantu mereka untuk mengenali fungsi tubuh yang memberi sinyal kapan waktunya untuk menggunakan toilet. Ini yang dinamakan “kesadaran toilet”.

Jadi bagaimana potty training dilakukan dengan cara Montessori? Berikut beberapa tips yang perlu Anda ketahui dan gunakan untuk anak Anda sendiri.

 

Ajari mereka tentang proses alami tubuh

Namun kebanyakan, mereka hanya ingin tahu dan ingin bermain-main dengan air atau menyiram toilet. Gunakan rasa ingin tahu mereka sebagai isyarat untuk mulai belajar toilet.

Tanyakan apakah mereka ingin menggunakan pispot setiap kali Anda mengganti popok anak Anda, ketika dia bangun, sebelum tidur, sebelum mandi, sebelum dan sesudah tidur siang, dan sebelum meninggalkan rumah. Tanyakan dengan santai aja dan tidak perlu memaksa anak Anda untuk melakukannya.

Latihan toilet ini tidak perlu dibesar-besarkan. Ini adalah proses yang alami, jadi jangan memberi hadiah kepada anak Anda atau memberi selamat setelah berhasil menggunakan pispot.
